CRRT STARTED AT HUMAN ORGAN TRANSPLANT CENTER

Nov. 17, 2013

Human Organ Transplant Center has started the service of Continuous Renal Replacement Therapy (CRRT). The training had been conducted at HOTC from 21st october 2013 to 25th october 2013. A significant number of participants from different hospitals of Nepal were present at the training. The training was structured by Human Organ Transplant Center in collaboration with Fresineus Medical care. The training was conducted by Ms. Annie Lam, Sales Manager-Distributors Markets, Central Asia Pacific Region and Mr. Helmut Winkler, Marketing Manager-Acute Therapies; Fresenius Medical Care.

Continuous Renal Replacement Therapy (CRRT) is a mode of renal replacement therapy for hemodynamically unstable, fluid overloaded, catabolic septic patients and finds its application in management of acute renal failure. the concept behind CRRT techniques is to dialyse patients in a more physiologic way, slowly over 24 hours, just like the kidney. Intensive care patients are particularly suited to these techniques as they are by definition, bed bound, and when acutely sick, intolerant of the fluid swings associated with haemodialysis. The major advantages of CRRT involves:

  • Suitable for use in hemodynamically unstable patients.
  • Precise volume control, which is immediately adaptable to changing circumstances.
  • Very effective control of uremia, hypophosphatemia and hyperkalemia.
  • Rapid control of metabolic acidosis
  • Improved nutritional support (full protein diet).
  • Available 24 hours a day with minimal training.
  • Safer for patients with brain injuries and cardiovascular disorders (particularly diuretic resistant CCF).
  • May have an effect as an adjuvant therapy in sepsis.
  • Probable advantage in terms of renal recovery.
  • Plasma clearence of proinflammatory mediators of inflammations like IL-1, IL-6, IL-8, TNF-a
